SUNY ULSTER ALUMNA BENEFITS FROM COLLEGE'S INTERNATIONAL STUDIES PROGRAM ... As Ulster County Community College begins its offerings in International Studies, a former student has benefited from the program. Amanda Youngs of Kingston, SUNY Ulster class of 1999, is the 6th through 12th grade media specialist at Chester Union Free School District in Orange County. Youngs will be studying Spanish and working with Mexican youngsters at Universidad Internacional in Cuernavaca, Mexico, for four weeks this summer. While in Mexico, she will teach and conduct sports activities with Mexican and other international children ranging from 5 to 12 years old.

Although Youngs transferred to a four-year college when she graduated from SUNY Ulster and earned her master’s degree in library and information sciences at a university in the midwest, when she needed help, she called SUNY Ulster. “I came back to my old school because I knew I’d get help here,” Youngs said.

SUNY Ulster’s Karen Robinson, coordinator of Career Services, put her in touch with Richard Cattabiani, director of the college’s new International Program. Cattabiani recommended Universidad Internacional’s Center of Bilingual Multicultural Studies and helped Youngs enroll. Universidad Internacional not only teaches Spanish to foreign students, but is also a fully accredited university that offers undergraduate degrees in 15 disciplines as well as two master’s programs.

Cattabiani says, “SUNY Ulster and Universidad Internacional are working to initiate a summer program in which SUNY Ulster students can earn 12 to 15 credits while studying in Mexico.” He adds that coursework will not be limited to learning Spanish. “We are planning an extensive selection to satisfy the State University of New York’s general education requirements. There will be offerings in business, sociology, art, music, literature and history. And the field trips—to archeological sites, museums and cultural events—will be exceptional.”

SUNY ULSTER STUDENT CHOSEN FOR SUMMER STUDY IN ENGLAND ... Victoria Hoffman of Saugerties, a student completing her first year at Ulster County Community College in Stone Ridge, has been selected to participate in the TRIO study abroad program from June 10 to July 2 this summer. The first student from SUNY Ulster to participate in a TRIO program, she is one of 18 students selected nationwide to study sociology at the University of Liverpool in England. The group will also travel to Northern Ireland, Belgium and Germany.

An education major with a concentration in Spanish, Victoria Hoffman says, “I love learning about other people and cultures.” This summer’s three-week program in England and Northern Ireland combines a three-credit university course on terrorism and its effects with project work in Liverpool and Londonderry. At the conclusion of the program, Hoffman and her classmates will present their findings on such topics as the conflict in Northern Ireland and lessons learned in negotiating its peaceful solution.

Richard Cattabiani, director of international programs at SUNY Ulster, describes the TRIO study abroad program as “highly selective and prestigious.” TRIO programs are federally funded programs to enable students to expand their educational and cultural opportunities. Participants are required to pay their travel and study expenses, but scholarships are available, including a partial scholarship that will help Hoffman pay for her study abroad.
